Responsibilities

Primary Duties: To provide spiritual care and guidance for students and staff. Be available for spiritual counseling. Give Bible studies to students, parents, staff. Oversee and develop spiritual programs at school. Encourage principles from the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy will be implemented in school policies and activities. Seek to disciple and grow staff and students spiritually. Assist to teach Bible classes, but this should not be the primary responsibility and should not overshadow other chaplaincy needs.

Specific Duties:

  • Establishing a rapport with the students and staff, earning their trust, admiration and confidence.
  • Be present every morning to greet and welcome students to school.
  • Be present and available during registration of students so parents and students can see and get to know you.
  • Lead out, help organize, and disciple others in the spiritual programs of the school.
  • Pray for and with students, parents, and staff.
  • Give Bible studies to those interested.
  • Overall, the chaplain monitors the spiritual tone of the school. He seeks to develop relationships with students, parents, and staff. He will provide spiritual guidance to the school and seek to find ways to disciple others.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in chaplaincy in schools or other institutions.
  • Fluent in English
  • College Graduate - preferably AB Theology graduate

  • Modest blouse/collared shirt, dress pants/loose-fitting skirt/dress below the knee.

  • Modest blouse, loose-fitting skirt/dress below the knee. (Please wear slips under skirts and dresses.)

  • Modest knee-length shorts, T-shirts; shorts and shirt required for swimming.

  • Collared shirt, long professional pants.

Unacceptable Dress

  • Tight and/or short shorts, clothing with low cleavages, short/sheer blouses or dresses, T-shirts with negative slogans/logos, bikinis, or revealing swimwear. Jewelry, dreadlocks, piercings, visible tattoos, extreme haircuts/styles, please do not bring jewelry.

Accommodations

Lodging

  • Shared accommodation in a concrete building - includes basic furniture, shared AVS kitchen, shared AVS bathroom, fridge, stove, fans or A/C, 220V electrical.
  • One set of towels and one set of bedding is provided.
  • Basic cooking utensils are provided.

Note: Beyond these things, the volunteer is responsible for bringing or purchasing anything else he/she may want or need.

Living There

PURPOSE: To demonstrate God's love and to establish positive relationships between the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the people of Timor-Leste.

Restrictions

Special arrangements need to be made for married volunteers prior to approval as there is currently no married volunteer housing. 

Compensation

Monthly Living Allowance: USD 300.00

Additional

Volunteer needs to raise funding to cover travel and expenses for both the required AVS orientation AND travel from AVS orientation to Dili, Timor-Leste (unless volunteer has committed to teaching at TAIS for 2 full years). The monthly living allowance is enough to cover food and other monthly expenses if the volunteer chooses to live simply and eat primarily a local diet, rather than buying all the imported food, eating out regularly, or spending a lot of money/time on the internet. It is optional to fundraise an additional USD 100-150/month for more comfortable living.

The monthly allowance stated above is the amount that they will receive after tithe, tax, and housing costs have been deducted.
