GENERAL INFORMATION about SDA Language School:
The regularly scheduled working hours are 240 hours per “teaching term” [1 teaching term = 2 months] with 16 hours of religion class included. New English Missionary Teachers (“ET-1”) are expected to attend a 2-week Orientation before a teaching term. Teachers are also expected to teach a number of “20- to 60-minute” English classes to students of all ages, for a total of 224 hours each term. 16 hours of “religion classes” will be taught in addition to 224 teaching hours per term [and will not exceed 16 hours per term and cannot count towards the 224 teaching hours (Friday Night Fellowship (Vespers) and Saturday Sabbath clubs do not count toward “religion classes”)]. With the exception of “special teaching days” ((i.e. scheduled Friday morning(s) and/or Sunday(s)) and two Fridays each term for a religious group event called “Mission Day” and a “Special Day” group event [events vary per school]), there will be classes only from Monday to Thursday.
Each term is approximately 8 weeks long with about 32-teaching days. Class schedules vary greatly by institute and student enrollment per term therefore, Teachers should prepare to teach classes between the hours of 6am and 10pm. In addition to the teaching hours, Teachers are expected to spend no less than 2 hours throughout the day for their respective lesson planning with co-English Teachers, recording student evaluations, comments and grading, etc. (if necessary). Those who unfortunately lack the number of classes to fulfill their contracted hours are required to participate in one-on-one, small group, and/or special classes via video conferencing, over the phone, and/or in the classroom. These extra classes are usually assigned by the director/pastor of the school.
*This is a Sample Schedule of a Teacher's day who teaches at an Adult/Junior school with 7 hours of teaching from Monday-Thursday.

JUNIOR AND/OR "KINDEREST" PROGRAMS:
Those assigned to an institute with a Junior and/or “Kinderest” program (Kindergarten to High school / K-12 students) have slightly a different kind of schedule. They usually have class from 2:30-9:30pm for a total of 6 (or more) class/“working” hours each day. Classes can be 20 - 60 minutes long with 0-10 minute passing periods. Teachers are required to attend scheduled meetings, come on time to the institute to plan the day's classes with their co-English Teachers as well as for grading, reporting, and consultations with parents (if need be).
CCTV's are installed in nearly all of our classrooms. Each class is recorded and only the headquarters, local coordinator, director, as well as the teacher, have access to viewing the recordings. This is purely used to assist the teachers in every possible way when needed, to help each teacher be the best that they can be, as well as support in a positive manner.
TEACHER LOUNGE:
Every institute has a Teacher's Lounge that has the following resources: computer with internet, chairs, tables, copy machine, and telephone.
TEACHER'S HOUSING:
All of the Teachers' apartments are not longer than a 10-15 minute walk from their respective institutes in case they would like to go home during their breaks. Some teachers live by themselves or, in some cases, may have to share an apartment, but have their own room, with one or two other teachers.
WEEKEND PROGRAMS at SDA Language School:
Teachers have the greatest opportunity to impact the lives of students through the weekend programs. All students are invited to attend weekend programs to improve their English as well as to learn about Christ and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Teachers are required to participate and lead out in all weekend programs unless it is their weekend off. Teachers receive two weekends off per term and it should be scheduled and discussed with the Director and staff of the school.
Weekend programs consist of an hour of worship on Friday evening at 7:00 pm with a discussion and activities that follows the worship based on a worship thought. On Saturday morning, there are club activities at 10am. English Teachers are free to choose how they will lead their club activity. Some popular activities include: Bible reading, translation, music (listening to a song and studying the English lyrics), drama, etc. During the following worship hour at 11am, Teachers may be asked to translate for the sermon (by reading a prepared script in English of the Korean sermon), preach a sermon, do children's story, or perform “special music”. Some local institutes choose to pursue additional activities in the afternoon, but it is up to the local director, coordinator and Teachers if they decide to do so.
***A suggestion to pray and meditate upon: As an English Missionary Teacher at SDALS, please do not lose sight of the focus that everything is mission oriented, and what would be asked and/or required of you, is purely motivated for God's glory through your missionary efforts.
