God Has a Reason

As I sit, cool wind from the electric fan dispelling the humidity from the room, I hear the friendly chatter of my sixth period World Literature class. They are supposed to be reading Beowulf right now, but instead they are learning Mandarin from one of my Chinese students. They will get on task eventually, that I don't doubt at all.

What amazes me is how quickly and naturally teaching has come to me. I have only been teaching for three weeks, yet it feels like I have been doing this for years. How this transfiguration occurred, I know not. How I ceased to be "Adam,” and like the Phoenix was reborn from the ashes as "Mr. Hicks," I know not.

I look at the lesson plans scribbled in the lesson book, and I am awed that the handwriting is mine. My voice rings with authority and clarity, coming from some unknown depths. The God we serve has sent me here, and I am firmly convinced it is He who is teaching through me. What better teacher's Aide than the Creator of the universe, the Designer of language?

Thus far, it has truly been an experience full of exultation and joy, trials and tribulations, great victories and frustrating defeats. Through it all I can wear a smile, for I know that God has a reason for sending me to the little island of Majuro.

Adam Hicks currently teaches at Delap Seventh-day Adventist School on the island of Majuro, Marshall Islands. Adam represents La Sierra University.
