We said goodbye to another youth volunteer today. I'm saying to myself, No, we're not getting another one, it's too hard to say goodbye.

It seems volunteers have a way of "wheedling" their way into our hearts and lives. They have no political agenda, no background information and often little training. Their youthful rawness brings honesty and love to our community.

They come simply to share God's love. I heard someone say at the airport, "It's such an inspiration to me to see someone following their Creator in the days of their youth."

Someone who loves Jesus and is taking an active role in the church is something money can't buy. Someone who is a role model for young people is something pastors should desire.

And volunteers themselves learn how much there is to be learned about people and ministry. They also learn new skills and make lifetime friends.

So, perhaps we'll get another volunteer after all.
