| Ingredients for a healthy
overseas experience include: |
- common sense,
- a positive attitude,
- knowledge of the health risks,
- the appropriate immunizations, and
- reasonable precautions.
|
| The
availability and quality of medical care varies worldwide.
Health facilities may be poor. Medical supplies and
skilled practitioners may be scarce. With the emergence
of AIDS and drug-resistant strains of malaria, it
is vital to remain healthy, avoid accidents, and
reduce any need for medical care.
Consider the following: |
- Do you have special needs in relation to
your health?
- Do you require a special diet or certain foods?
- What are your allergies?
- Do you require hard-to-find medications?
- Do you need certain supplies like contact lens solution, hearing aid
batteries, etc.?
|
| Preparations need to begin
long before you leave home. |
- Have a complete physical exam to identify
and follow-up any medical problems.
- Dental care should be up-to-date, including dentures and bridges.
- Eyes should be tested and prescriptions for glasses renewed. Take two
pairs of glasses and a copy of the prescription. Prescription sunglasses are
useful.
- Make appointments for the necessary immunizations.
- Take a supply of any prescription medications to last through your stay,
plus a copy of your prescription(s) with the generic name of the drug(s). Pack
some medications in your carry-on luggage in case your luggage is lost in transit.
- Pack a First-Aid medical kit. If time permits,
take a First-Aid course, especially if going to a remote area with
limited medical facilities.
