Part Three
Study Questions

1. After reaching Chapter 9 about culture, name four variations in cultural world view, behavior, beliefs or values that you see around you right in your home country or community.

2. Study the lists of "cultural stereotypes" on pp. 64, 65 of Passport to Mission. Where and how have you encountered any of these? What reactions would non-Westerners have to these stereotypes about them? How will you feel when people "pigeon hole" you according to the stereotypes they have about Western people?

3. Which areas do you anticipate will be the most difficult "danger zones" for you, leading to possible culture shock? What are some positive steps you can take to help yourself if and when this happens?

4. What practical ideas does the chapter on Cross-cultural Communication (chapter 12) suggest to you as you face the challenges of communicating cross-culturally.

5. What is your "natural" style of handling conflict (chapter 13)? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this style? Living and working in close quarters with both nationals as well as other volunteers from various cultures may make it necessary to use some other styles and approaches. What are three things that might be helpful to you in this area?
