being there > language learning

Living in a country without knowing the language is a challenge. But language gives an insight into culture, history and politics, and your volunteer service will be doubly valuable if you make the effort to learn the local language. The sooner you begin, the better.

  • Don’t be surprised if you have difficulty understanding English in another country. The English accent you know may not be the same English accent spoken in the country that you are serving.
  • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and look like a fool. People generally appreciate your efforts and are eager to help. They may even find your accent funny. It’s a great way to make friends.

Learning a new language is a lot like working out:
The more you practice, the stronger you get.
